Testing for remote computer access and data volume traffic are ongoing as plans are being worked out for this new structure. For most companies, that means VPN or other remoting methods. Virtual meetings are replacing face-to-face ones and pseudo to full quarantines are on the rise. Phone conversations will go on but this won’t fully suffice to cover staffing roles. And besides, you’re talking to neighbors and wondering if you should take one more trip to the grocery store. The 2018 dataPARC User Conference was a success! Held in Portland Oregon from October 15-18, people traveled from all over the world from six different countries to present or attend. Countries represented were: United States, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and China. This year we had twenty Capstone presentations and eight customer or partner presentations.

Being able to easily connect disparate data sources for decision-making is a key challenge in the age of IIOT. The lack of connection of these data sources and the creation of data silos is one version of the “big data” problem we hear about.

There are many different systems available for storing and analyzing manufacturing process data. A historian is a database application that provides a means of storing the data. Nowadays, historians are a commodity and sites routinely have multiple sources of data – everything from embedded historians in control systems to custom databases for specific purposes. The true value is in how the data is used, not where it is stored.

Soft sensors, with predictive models, provide scenarios in which estimations can drive decision-making and improve the reliability of current systems, often working hand in hand with their hard sensor counterparts thus creating comprehensive monitoring networks.

Buzzwords have always been a part of technology but recently it seems the usage has exploded. At the same time usage is growing, the terms themselves have changed and evolved. Many contemporary terms now include a wide spectrum of meaning in their definitions, applying to new applications and solutions brought to market. In some cases, you’re also seeing very liberal use of terms for marketing and sales. From our perspective, the more we can all talk a common language and the more we realize many terms are replacing old concepts, the better off we will be.
